German Unity Day, 3rd of October

3rd of October is our National Holiday, because on that day in 1990 Germany was reunified. 28 years of German reunification and freedom vs. the 28 years (10,315 days) the Wall seperated Berlin, from 13th of August 1961 to 9th of November 1989, the day and year the Berlin Wall came down in the wake of the GDR's peaceful revolution. Which makes 2018 a rather special year in our most recent history. 28 | 28

This was taken in July on a wonderful walk with Sabine.R, marionrosengarten, --Conrad-N-- and H. Roebke. We sort of stumbled upon this late night event. Later, when I had done some research, I learned that this was a special event to celebrate this special year, a daily event / muli-media show (from June, 25th to Oct., 3rd 2018) about the history of German parliamentarialism and the Reichstag building.

The White Crosses you can see at the fence are a memorial dedicated to those who died there trying to overcome the Wall to flee to the western part of Berlin. This spot on the bank of the river spree belonged to West Berlin, while the opposite bank of the Spree was already a part of East Berlin. So near, and yet so far, at least between 1961 and 1989. I'm glad those days are over.

Der Tag der Deutschen Einheit im Jahr 2018 ist ein ganz besonderer, denn er markiert nicht nur 28 Jahre Wiedervereinigung, sondern es waren auch 28 Jahre (10.315 Tage) Berliner Mauer bis zu ihrem Fall im November 1989. Somit ist Deutschland in diesem Jahr genau so lange wiedervereinigt, wie die Mauer Berlin geteilt hatte. Schon bemerkenswert, oder? Zumal sich wohl kaum einer noch 1988 hatte vorstellen können, dass die Mauer überhaupt je fallen und Deutschland bereits 1990 wiedervereinigt sein würde.

Dies ist ein Foto vom Juli, als Abschluss des wunderbaren Fotowalks mit Sabine.R, marionrosengarten, --Conrad-N-- und H. Roebke aufgenommen. Von der Veranstaltung dort wurden wir echt überrascht, später habe ich herausgefunden, dass dies eine tägliche (vom 25.06. bis 03.10.2018) multi-mediale Präsentation anlässlich dieses besonderen Jahres in unserer jüngeren Geschichte war: "Dem Deutschen Volke. Eine parlamentarische Spurensuche. Vom Reichstag zum Bundestag."

Die Weißen Kreuze am Zaun zum Spreeufer sind ein Mahnmal für alle diejenigen, die an dieser Stelle beim Versuch, in den Berliner Westteil zu gelangen, umgekommen sind. Wir befanden uns auf der ehemaligen Westseite, während bereits das gegenüberliegende Ufer zu Ost-Berlin gehörte. So nah und doch so fern, jedenfalls zwischen 1961 und 1989.
