È la residenza reale più grande al mondo e i proprietari storici sono stati i Borbone di Napoli, oltre a un breve periodo in cui fu abitata dai Murat.
Nel 1997 è stata dichiarata dall’UNESCO, insieme con l’acquedotto di Vanvitelli e il complesso di San Leucio, patrimonio dell’umanità.

Tra il 1752 e il 1774 il re di Napoli, Carlo III di Borbone, ingaggia l’architetto Van Wittel (italianizzato Vanvitelli) per la realizzazione della propria dimora reale. Anziché la capitale, più pericolosa a causa dello sbocco sul mare, che facilitava invasioni anche via mare, sceglie come sede l’entroterra campano e l’odierna Caserta. Prendendo ispirazione dalla Reggia di Versailles, viene costruito un monumentale edificio di 5 piani, 42 metri di altezza, mentre il suo parco è costruito seguendo l’andamento naturale del colle retrostante la reggia. Terminata da Vanvitelli figlio e rifinita fino a metà ‘800, tale dimora resta il massimo esempio del barocco italiano: un mastodontico capolavoro di 47.000 metri quadri suddivisi in 1.200 stanze. Parco e cortili si estendono per oltre 10 ettari di terreno!

Between 1752 and 1774 the King of Naples, Charles III of Bourbon, hired the architect Van Wittel (Italianized Vanvitelli) for the realization of his own royal residence. Instead of the capital, which is more dangerous due to its access to the sea, which also facilitated invasions by sea, it chose the Campania hinterland and today's Caserta as its center. Taking inspiration from the Palace of Versailles, a monumental 5-storey building is built, 42 meters high, while its park is built following the natural course of the hill behind the palace. Finished by son Vanvitelli and finished until the mid-1800s, this residence remains the greatest example of Italian baroque: a gigantic 47,000 square meter masterpiece divided into 1,200 rooms.
