La costruzione dell'edificio iniziò nel 1402, nonostante i progetti fossero già pronti nel 1298, quando Sebenico divenne municipalità. I lavori tesi alla modifica della vecchia chiese presero il via nel 1431. Numerosi artigiani veneti e locali vi lavorarono, secondo lo stile gotico.

Nel 1441 il Gran consiglio cittadino affidò i lavori a Giorgio Orsini. Egli può essere considerato il vero artefice della cattedrale, che ampliò con una navata laterale ed absidi, aggiunse una cupola, il portale riccamente scolpito e altre varie sculture, tra cui 71 piccole teste umane sulle parti laterali, e un battistero, il tutto in pietra. Lo stile dell'Orsini è tipico del Rinascimento adriatico, che è caratterizzato dall'armonica fusione di elementi formali di gotico fiorito inseriti in una struttura rinascimentale.

Tra il 1475 ed il 1536 i lavori vennero proseguiti dal maestro toscano Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino. Proseguì nella costruzione in stile rinascimentale, completando la cupola e le sculture esterne raffiguranti San Giacomo e San Marco, il tetto e la parte superiore della facciata. Costruì anche il triforo (gallerie parallele) e lavorò sul presbiterio ed il santuario. Dopo la morte di Fiorentino del 1505 la costruzione venne terminata da un altro gruppo di artigiani veneziani.
La cattedrale venne ufficialmente consacrata nel 1555.

Jakova) in Šibenik, Croatia is a triple-nave basilica with three apses and a dome (32 m high inside) It is the church of the Catholic Church in Croatia, and the see of the Šibenik diocese. It is also the most important architectural monument of the Renaissance in the entire country. Since 2000, the Cathedral has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
