British Leyland must have bought their brown paint by the tanker-load in the 1970s; unfortunately, it is not a colour that has aged well. However, if that is the worst feature of this 1977 SD1 then the new owner will have a lot to be thankful for.

Other than a current V5C, there is no other paperwork to hand to tell us of its earlier life, although it is in remarkably sound condition and it could well be that the 36.056 miles shown on the odometer are correct. Back in 2012, when the car had its last MOT, there were 36,054 miles showing so it has certainly had little use in the past few years. The bodywork is sound and straight and the engine bay is clean and tidy, especially so for a 41 year-old car.

The SD1 was quite something in its day and the styling was lauded by the Press for its adventurous “Ferrari-esque” lines. It went well too and was turned into a fearsome racing car at the hands of Tom Walkinshaw and Win Percy. It also found favour with the boys in blue and many drivers of a certain age will remember looking over their shoulders to find a high-speed “Ham Sandwich” suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Old tech it may be, but the SD1 was good for 0-60 mph in 9 seconds and a top speed of over 120 mph (“Purely theoretical, officer”) so it is still a useful tool in today’s traffic conditions. And it you don’t like the colour, you could always paint it red and white and make a Tom Walkinshaw replica.

As it is some time since it has last run, it will need a careful recommissioning before use once more.
