Fiat 508 Balilla Pick-up - 1933

            Introduced in 1925, FIAT's first mass-produced small car had been the 509, a highly successful design that succeeded in bringing civilised motoring within the financial reach of ordinary Italians. its successor - the 508 Balilla, introduced in 1932 - represented even greater value for money, being some 40 percent cheaper than the 509. Powered by a 995 cc, four-cylinder, sidevalve engine producing 20 bhp, the 508 featured a cruciform-braced chassis frame, three-speed gearbox (four-speed from 1934) and hydraulic brakes and could comfortably top 80 km/h. Three all-steel body types were offered on the 508 chassis: a two-door saloon, two-seat tourer, and four-seat tourer, in excess of 40.000 being made before the introduction of the four-speed Balilla in 1934. The original 508 was superseded by the overhead-valve 508C Balilla 1100 in 1937. 

Un-restored and believed largely original condition, this charming Balilla pickup truck was discovered recently in an old castello in the Marche region of Italy. It is believed that the FIAT was used to deliver bread to a bakery's customers in the countryside, as evidenced by an old letter found in the car. The letter comes with it, as does the Italian libretto. An ideal fun vehicle for advertising purposes, or for supporting your pre-war competition car in style.
