The Avant-Garde 402 was Peugeots large-car offering in the pre-war market and had ceased production in 1942 for fairly obvious reasons.

The post-war market craved transport, and quite sensibly, Peugeot concentrated on building as many small cars as they could. It wasn’t until 1955 that they felt able to move upscale, with the introduction of the Pininfarina-styled 403.

A conventional Ponton layout, its 1.200 cc engine had rather a lot on its plate and soon gave way to a 1.467 cc upgrade. In typical French fashion, a large range of body styles and wheelbase lengths were offered, including a stretch version with 10” extra in the wheelbase.

Available as an eight-seater in Familiale form with three rows of seats, or a five-seater Commerciale with extra space for kitchen sinks, they sold well, being sold as a budget alternative alongside the super-square 404 which had been launched in 1960.

This impressive 403 Commerciale was imported from Portugal in 2013 according to its accompanying NOVA document. Other than its green Portuguese registration document, there is no other paperwork, so we know nothing of its history. Bidders are advised that we have been unable to release the steering lock despite having the correct key.

There can’t be many more practical classics than this one, with space for the whole family.
