The Delightful Small Copper

            The Small Copper (lycana phlaeus) is a small, fast flying butterfly which by its bright copper-coloured forewings is unmistakable. It is on the wing throughout the summer months between April and October.  In fact, I saw one this morning in my front garden.

Males are territorial and can be seen basking on a plant or rock waiting for females, every now and again chasing off other insects that encroach on their space. 

Alas, it is on the growing list of shrinking species, suggesting climate and habitat changes are having greater impact than previously thought.
