NYNH&H FL-9 2014 - a photo on Flickriver

NYNH&H FL-9 2014

            My LEGO model of New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad EMD FL9 no. 2014.

These locomotives were built between 1956 and 1960 exclusively for the NYNH&H. They were based on the F units that were common at the time, with a longer body to accommodate more internal equipment. The added weight of this equipment necessitated a 3-axle rear truck, giving it the unusual wheel arrangement of B-A1A. 

The FL9s were dual mode locomotives, typically operating on diesel power but capable of using under or over-running third rail power - they even had a small pantograph to bridge third rail gaps in Grand Central Terminal. The dual mode capability allowed trains to run from GCT to non-electrified destinations without needing to switch locomotives at New Haven. 

These locomotives can also be seen as the largest symbol of the shortsightedness and mismanagement that led the New Haven Railroad to bankruptcy. The FL9s were purchased with the intent of abandoning the railroad's electrification from New York to New Haven, rather than updating the Cos Cob power plant. The fact that the entire line to Boston is now electrified shows the shortsightedness. Introduction of the FL9s allowed the railroad to scrap all of it's pre-1955 electric locomotives, including the EP-2's and EP-3's (which I've already modelled). Ironically, the FL9s had higher operating costs and lower performance than their predecessors. Word is that it took 2+ FL9s to haul what an EP-3 could. This shortsightedness by the McGinnis management eventually led the company to be folded into the infamous Penn Central Railroad. 

Multiple FL9s still exist, in paint schemes ranging from New Haven, Metro North, Amtrak, and Maine Eastern. No. 2014 is currently in Texas, anticipating use on a tourist railroad.

My model is based on an F-unit design by Tony Sava and Nate Brill, with stickers by OK Brick Works. It has one PF train motor in the front truck (which coincidentally is half the number in my EP-3, thus meaning the power ratio between the two models is correct) and Brickstuff lights in the nose. It can handle R40 curves and presumably switches, though I haven't tried the latter. The rear truck is based on the design used on my 6-axle heavyweight passenger car, where the front axle is held loosely to allow for movement through tight curves and switches.
