Documentary photography: the mess left behind at an illegal campsite

            This is in a forested area at the east end of Prince's Island Park, at the north edge of downtown Calgary. It is typical of sites where a homeless person has set up a campsite for a few nights (or weeks) and then abandoned it, leaving a pile of garbage behind. Note the shopping cart - the person using it was in possession of stolen property, in addition to other offences (littering, illegal camping on city property). A city clean-up crew will eventually remove this garbage pile.

I stated "typical" above because I have observed and photographed dozens of such illegal campsites over my years in Calgary, and this is what you see - sometimes with a tent, sometimes not. I usually don't post photos of these messy sites because they are unattractive subjects, but they are interesting regarding various topics: urbanism, social disorder, poverty, homelessness, environmentalism, sociology.
