High Autumn. Bombus pascuorum, Common Carder Bumblebee, on Lady's Eardrops, Fuchsia magellanica, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Though our Lady's Eardrops were already reported at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the plant was first formally described by Jean-Baptiste Antoine Pierre de Monet de Lamarck (1744-1829) in 1788. He used the report of great botanist, adventurer and naturalist, wily Philibert Commerçon (1727-1773). Commerçon was a member of the French round-the-world expedition (1766-1769) led by Louis Antoine de Bourgainville (1729-1811) (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/2408098566/in/photolis...).
At one of their watering holes in the Magellan Straits, Commerçon collected this Fuchsia and Lamarck named it for him. It's High Autumn here in Amsterdam now (see inset) but not yet chilly enough for this Common Carder Bumblebee to stop foraging not for pollen but for nectar.
