Fine Euphorbian. Winged Beauty Shrub, Dalechampia spathulata, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

            It's easy to see how this fascinating member of the Euphorbias came by its English name; its Latin one is derived from Jacques d'Aléchamps (1513-1588), an innovative French botanist. According to Curtis's Botanical Magazine (1867) it was first collected by the intrepid Austrian discoverer and naturalist Benedikt Roezl (1825-1885), who went to Mexico in 1854. The plant (or its seeds) was then sent to Zurich. There's the story as well, though, that it was introduced to the Botanical Garden of Brussels already in 1839, where it flowered in 1841. No problem: often plants were doubly discovered and described in those days with relatively slow communications (and taxonomical studies).
Whatever the case, Dalechampia is happily flowering in our very own Hortus!
