08.18.19.Le Château d’Aigle - Suisse

            C’est probablement à la fin du 12e siècle que la partie la plus ancienne du Château d’Aigle est construite par la famille des Chevaliers d’Aigle, les Milites de Allio.

Mis à mal par les Bernois lors de leur conquête de la région en 1475, le château est fortement reconstruit par eux quelques années plus tard pour être un défi à tous les ennemis de leur puissante République en même temps que la résidence prestigieuse de leurs Gouverneurs. De nombreuses transformations ultérieures finiront par lui donner sa silhouette actuelle.

Après la Révolution vaudoise de 1798 qui chasse les Bernois et voit le Canton de Vaud proclamer son indépendance dans le cadre de la Suisse, il est acquis par la Commune d’Aigle. De 1804 à 1972 il est le siège du tribunal et des prisons. Il accueille aussi l’hospice des pauvres de la ville de 1804 à 1916.
