KDF PRORA, FROM EAST POINT

Prora, Island of Rügen, Germany

“Every single worker should be able to go onto a two weeks holiday once a year”. This was the main thought behind the “Kraft durch Freude” project of the Nazi Regime during the late 20’s. Hans Speer himself drew up the first plans to create the “Coloss of Prora” a humongous building that should end up being nearly 6km long with over 12’000 rooms to host 20’000 guest at a time. The Nazi regime run out of time and money during World War II. Still Prora ended up being over 4km long, of which 3km are standing today.
This view is from the farthest East point.

I took this shoot around 4 o’clock in the afternoon; the light was not ideal with high clouds and no sunshine coming through. I used a yellow filter to give the scenery a better contrast. The building actually leans forward as it was build on moving sand, more and more people fear now that at some point it might just collapse forward.
I choose a lower angle and included the dirt road to give a real feeling about the length and size of the building. The dead brushes and cut down trees to the right were used to add more drama and also to show the desolation of this place.
