St Giles' cathedral - a photo on Flickriver

            St Giles' cathedral, Edinburgh. A church has stood on this site since at least Norman times, though few vestiges of the original building remain. Most of what is visible was built in two major 19th century restoration programmes. The first, in the 1830s saved the building from falling down. The second, between 1872 and 1883 is mainly responsible for what can be seen today and was initiated by William Chambers ( of publishing fame) and his brother, Robert, then later furthered by their nephew, another Robert.
