The Braunston 'goddess' - a photo on Flickriver

            In a corner of All Saints' churchyard in Braunston, Rutland, rests this stone carving known locally as the 'Braunston goddess'. Thought to be of pre-Christian origin, it has a flat back but the face and breasts of a woman on the front. 

One suggestion for the flat side is that it has been put on the ground and used as a step, in order to conceal the rather revealing front aspect but other similar stones have been found in other places which are carved only on one side like this.

A very similar figure is La Gran'mère du Chimquière ( Cemetery grandmother) outside St Martin's church in Guernsey, though it is believed that that one was enhanced in Roman times. 

Yet another and much simpler carved stone figure appears outside the church of St Marie de Castel, also in Guernsey and it is thought that they were probably fertility goddesses and served the same function as the sheelanagigs of Ireland. Other similar carvings appear in France and they seem to belong particularly to areas where the culture has been predominantly a Celtic one.
