The Amakusa Maru was a small 2,400 tons ship build in 1901 for use in the Near Seas and operated as a ferry. The Japanese Travel Bureau was asked in 1939 by a Jewish organization in the U.S.A. to assist in the evacuation of Jewish refugees from Europe to the U.S. The JTB arranged such tours via Japan for about 15,000 Jews between September 1940 and June 1941. Many of them held Visas issued by the Japanese Consul Sugihara in Kovno/Kaunas, Lithuania. Chiune Sugihara, the acting consul at the Japanese Consulate in Lithuania is now known as "The Schindler of Japan". The first such evacuation used the Trans-Siberian Railway to transport the refugees from Europe to Vladivostok, where they transferred to the ship. This ship was sunk three years later by US submarine Bang on November 23, 1944 east of what was then called Formosa.
