Heroic Vessel

            The R.N.L.B. Thomas Kirk Wright served from 1939 - 1962. It was one of a small number of Surf Class lifeboats and was driven by impellers, rather than propellers. There was a delay of several decades before the next jet boats came into RNLI service, with the E-Class and the Shannon.

85 years ago, this vessel was part of the fleet sent to Dunkirk to evacuate British and French troops. It was towed part of the way by trawlers, due to its low cruising speed, but once there performed admirably, due to its shallow draft of only 2’ 6”.
