Free City of Essen - Kärnitzer Ulanen

            The Kärnitzer Ulanen or 'Uhlans of Kärnitz' are Essen's fast shock cavalry. Hailing from the rural village of Kärnitz, situated on the plains outside the Free City, they are characterized by their signature caps and simple double-breasted short jackets which are adorned with black epaulettes - a rare item in Carnite armies and which is probably derived of the uniforms of the Great Powers of Madrice.

These stoic men are usually drawn from cattle drivers and shepherds and are excellent horsemen, albeit for a Carnite. 

The hard-hitting lancers are a rather recent phenomenon within the army of Essen. Even though Essen has long favored fast shock tactics over sludge combat and standoffs, they are slow to introduce new units and ways into their army, like most Carnites. However, similarly armed units in Corrish and Oléonder armies, such as the ETTC Lancers or Chevaux-Légers Lanciers have proven themselves ample to make the case to raise lancer units on Essen's behalf.

Less frivolous and theatrical than their hussar cousins, the Kärnitzer Ulanen are often used on screening and scouting duties ahead of the main army. The somewhat similar role on the battlefield and different backgrounds - hussars are raised in Essen itself - has led to a lowkey friendly rivalry between the Uhlans and Hussars.

I finally got around to getting a proper lightbox! The quality of photography should improve vastly now, with better lighting. I'm still getting the hang of everything, but this is the first shot with the light box and I'm quite glad of the improved quality already.
