La Goerz Ango, també coneguda com a Goerz Anschütz és una càmara de gran format molt interessant i avançada al seu temps. De fet, aquesta unitat en concret, datable a l’entorn de 1908, és més refinada que la original, que sí fou una càmara revolucionaria. La primera Goerz Anschütz amb obturador de cortina o plà focal ja va assolir velocitats de 1/1200 el 1890. Per tant es tractava de la càmara més ràpida, i amb diferencia, del seu moment.

Aquesta variant post 1905 ja comptava amb tots els ajustos d’obturador modificables externament, al contrari de models inicials on calía obrir la càmara per modificar les velocitats. En concret, calia ajustar la distancia en l’escletxa del obturador a ma. La càmara que veieu té precísament una complex i interessantissim grup de botos i controls del obturador. Es pot triar entre els classics modes T(ime), B(ulb) i I (o foto normal). Per a aquest darrer, cal ajustar tant la tensió de la molla com la llargada de l’escletxa del obturador. Sort que un diagrama metal·lic a la part superior de la càmara diu quines son les combinacions per a les velocitats, des de 1/10 fins a uns inmensos 1/1200, considerant que és un mecanisme de finals del s. XIX lleugerament renovat a inicis del s. XX. Un detall fantastic és troba en la tela del obturador, signada per l’inventor del mecanisme: “Ottomar Anschütz, Lissa (Posen)”; Lissa i Posen són les actuals Leszno i Poznan, a Polonia. La lent és una Goerz Dogmar de f4,5 / 195mm, probablement fabricada cap a 1915-1920. En conjunt la càmera sembla una Ango tardana, de cap al 1919-1924.

Ah, i una càmara Goerz Anschütz de 1/2 placa com aquesta era una dels que portava Frank Hurley a l’expedició antartica de E. Shackleton junt amb la Kodak 3A Folding Pocket, No se la va poder emportar en la dramatica cursa per sobreviure cap a Elephant Island, on trià la "menys" pesada Kodak No.3A Folding Pocket (sí que feu fotos amb ella als campaments sobre el gel al mar de Weddel). I a més, aquesta que teniu aquí fou venguda a Londres, tal com indica la plaqueta de la botiga: The Westminster Photographic Exchange. Fins i tot les distancies d'enfoc del objectiu estan en iardes...

The Goerz Ango, a.k.a Goerz Anschütz is a “klappkamera”, or strut camera for glass plates, in several sizes. The Anschütz cameras used the impressive focal plane shutter patented by Ottomar Anschutz in 1888 and first used in Goerz cameras in 1890. It was back then a revolutionary design, reaching speeds of 1/1200, impossible with the usual leaf shutters. This is an advanced model, strut-folding and with all external controls (first produced in 1905). First Anschütz cameras were wooden boxes and had to be adjusted with the shutter opened. In this camera, made circa 1920, you “only” had to adjust several features of the shutter to obtain the desired speed. To take the picture you unfold the camera, set the aperture of the lens and focus on the ground glass. Then you set the mode of photography (T, B(bulb) or I(instant)), the tension on the spring, the lenght of the curtain slit and charge all the mechanism by hand. At least a nice brass diagram helps you with the correct combination of tensions and slit lenghts. Phew...

A really nice touch is that the shutter curtains are marked with the name of the inventor (Goerz was the camera manufacturer, but not the inventor/maker of that shutter). In red ink it says: “Ottomar Anschütz, Lissa (Posen)”. Lissa and Posen now are Leszno and Poznan in Poland, then it was Prussia, in the German Empire. The lens is a Goerz Dogmar f4,5 / 195mm. It looks like that it’s serial number is the key to place this lens (and camera arround 1915-1920).

I though this camera was a 9x12cm format camera, but found that the holders were smaller, so in the end I discovered that it is a quarter plate camera (83x108mm). I’m trying to put film sheaths with cut larger format film in it. At least the shutter seems to work well.

PD: Frank Hurley used a half-plate Goerz Anschütz in the famous E. Shackleton antartic expedition, but he was forced to abandon it on the ice of Weddel sea. He continued only with a Kodak 3A Folding Pocket camera, a bit more easy to carry and use, and much more easier to find even now.
