Volkswagen Golf Bon Jovi Edition - a photo on Flickriver

            Those Bon Jovi decals on this third-generation Volkswagen Golf parked in Patay aren't aftermarket add-ons.  This is a special-edition car that was available only in Europe.

Let me explain.  In the mid-nineties, Volkswagen sponsored the European tours of three world-famous rock bands - Pink Floyd in 1994, the Rolling Stones in 1995, and Bon Jovi in 1996.  What resulted was probably the only good thing to come out of corporate sponsorship of rock bands; VW produced a limited-edition Golf in honor of each band, with distinctive markings on the exterior.  I'd known that these cars existed, but I never thought I'd see one.

I'm technically labeling this '96 Golf as a forbidden-fruit, maybe because North America got the base two-door Golf for only a year or two (1993 and 1994) and there were never any special-edition rock-band Golfs for any band in the New World.  No doubt the engine in this car was also unavailable in North America, which only got a two-liter inline four and a diesel option, along with VR6 engines for the Mark 3 GTI. 

This Bon Jovi Golf is kind of dirty, but then I've been led to understand that a Bon Jovi Golf can be slippery when wet. ;-)
