Houses of Jewish ghetto in Venice - a photo on Flickriver

            Come i castelli medievali, circondati da fossati per difesa, il ghetto ebraico di Venezia si distingue non solo per la densità abitativa (che eleva oltre misura gli edifici), ma anche per i rii che lo contornano, veri e propri limiti per la segregazione degli abitanti.
Scrive Riccardo Calimani nella sua "Storia del ghetto di Venezia": "Il recinto doveva essere completato con due alti muri: tutte le uscite dovevano essere chiuse e le porte e le finestre dovevano essere murate. I custodi dovevano abitare in quel luogo giorno e notte per custodirlo [...] Gli ebrei dovevano pagare anche due barche che, giorno e notte, con continuità avrebbero percorso i canali che circondavano la zona. Se qualche ebreo fosse stato trovato fuori del ghetto di notte erano previste pene crescenti".
