Roman Pelopponese VI - Gladiators’ Mosaic

            Roman gladiatorial contests were in practice adopted with enthusiasm across the Greek-speaking provinces, performed as part of the festivals of the imperial cult, as well as through individual acts of energetism (Robert 1940). Given that Patras was a Roman colony, its inhabitants enjoyed both Greek and Roman style entertainments, and it is not surprising to ﬁnd there plentiful evidence of gladiatorial contests; in addition to reliefs and funerary stelae, these include a mosaic showing a contest of two gladiators found within a Roman house. 
The main scene flanked by tendrils shows a couple of two gladiators, a judge to their left, and, behind them, another character, possibly a second judge. One of the two gladiators is named as “Kallimorphos”, a ﬁgure who reappears on a funerary relief from Patras, while the umpire in charge is named as Teimocrates. Ga[io] is the name other character. The names give a sense of authenticity, suggesting that this contest might have formed part of a spectacle sponsored (or at least enjoyed) by the master of the house.
