Ancient Corinth IV - Apollo’s Temple

Southwestern Corner.
Apollo’s temple in Corinth is a Doric peripteral temple, 6 x 15 columns with double cella, one opening east, one opening west. Each cella had 2 rows of columns, a pronaos distyle in antis. The monolithic columns, shafts plus capitals, are 7,22 m high. The mean spacing of the columns from axis to axis on the west end, is was 3.70 m. The column capitals are cut as separate blocks of stone. The stylobate measures 53.82 X 21.48 m. It shows some upward curvature. The passageway between the peristyle and the wall of the celia was somewhat more than 2.60 m. in width.
Although most of this mid-6th century BC building has been destroyed, the bedrock preserves cutting made to receive the foundation blocks and thus allows a reconstruction of the temple plan.
As is well known, the interior ground plan of the Archaic temple included a pronaos and a room (cella) facing east and, behind it, divided by a wall, a smaller chamber opened towards the western porch or opisthodomos. Although the Athenian Parthenon, which was dedicated to a single deity, shares a similar ground plan, with its self-contained western chamber possibly having served as a treasury, some scholars have argued in favor of a joint dedication of the Archaic temple in Corinth, imagining a different deity in each of the two chambers.
After a detailed examination of inner rooms in Greek temples, some scholars have recently observed that "in most Greek temples the presence of inner rooms is best explained by the need for storing and safe-keeping temple treasures”. In light of her persuasive demonstration of this function for the "opisthodomos" of the Parthenon, a similar interpretation for the western chamber in the building on Temple Hill at Corinth is today accepted.
