Funerary Base for an Athlete - III - a photo on Flickriver

            Base for a funerary kouros found in Athens, Keramikos area, built into the Themistoklean wall. The scenes carved on all three sides have an impressive vitality, with expressive figures and slight differences of detail in the hair. The treatment of the anatomical details and the musculature is astonishing. According to the bass-reliefs decorating the three faces, the kouros that stood on the base will have depicted an athlete.

Scene in the palaestra. Six nude athletes are depicted. From left to right, a shot-putter prepares to put the
shot, followed by a gesticulating youth. In the centre are two runners: the one on the left with his palms open is a competitor in the “stadion” (sprint) while the other, with his fists clenched, competes in the “dolichos” (long—distance race). The two youths at the right are spectators; the one on the left wares his arms vigorously, while the one on the right has his back to the viewer and his head turned to the left.
