Aquileia Julio-Claudian Cycle - VI - a photo on Flickriver

            Octavian or Gaius Caesar? This character belonging to the Julio-Claudian dynasty was identified as Octavian or Gaius Caesar. According to some scholars, this portrait is a copy of the youthful portrait of Octavian known as pre-Actium type. Other scholars recognize the young man here portrayed as Gaius Caesar (17 BC - AD 4), first son of Julia and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, grandson of Augustus and his designated successor.
The portrait is extremely damaged because, having lost its honorary and artistic meaning with the passage of the years, it was re-used as ordinary building material. The head was found among the stones used for the construction of the Aquileia river dock.
