Little Grebe catching Elvers - a photo on Flickriver

On the subject of something new, I was watching Little Grebes fishing at the weekend. These birds are fiercely territorial and when not doing so they were diving down and bringing back up what looked like Elvers. Back in April some 2 Million Elvers were released on the Westhay and Catcott nature reserve so I’m fairly sure that many of these will not make it to maturity. The Elvers put up a very strong fight and it took the Grebes some time to swallow these little creatures. The Grebes would throw them into the air, release them, bash them, in fact, do almost anything to finish them off. I just hope that some survive to breed in the Oceans.
