Court Church, Cetinje, Montenegro (2012)

            Cetinje is former capital of the Kingdom of Montenegro. The city nestles on a small karst plain surrounded by mountains, including Mt. Lovćen, the Black Mountain from which Montenegro gets its name. Cetinje was founded in the 15th century. It became the centre of Montenegrin life and both a cradle of Montenegrin culture and an Orthodox religious centre. The Montenegrins constantly battled the Turks and Albanians, and Cetinje was overrun by Turkish forces in 1692, 1714, and 1785. On the first occasion the defendants of the monastery fired the gunpowder supply, destroying the monastery, themselves, and many Turks.

The Court Church in Cetinje was built by King Nikola I of Montenegro in 1890, on the place where there used to be a monastery that Ivan Crnojević built in the 15th century dedicated to the Mother of God. Dedicated to the Birth of the Most Holy Mother of God, the church is a one-nave structure with an apsis, six-sided dome which rests on the rectangular base and distaff bell tower with three bell opening. There is a luxurious iconostasis at the church, the work of craftsmen from Saint Petersburg from the end of 19th century. In 2012 the church became a part of the History Museum of Montenegro.

The remains of Ivan Crnojević (Cetinje’s founder), King Nikola I, Queen Milena (Montenegro’s last sovereigns) and Montenegrin princesses Ksenija and Vjera are interred in the church. Although Nikola I and Milena may have been unpopular after fleeing the country for Italy during WWI, they received a hero’s welcome in 1989, when their bodies were returned and interred in the white-marble tombs in a three-hour service.
