Panda, Chengdu Panda Research Base, Chengdu, Sichuan, China (2013)

            The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear species native to Sichuan, China. "Giant" is used to distinguish it from the Red Panda. The Giant Panda’s diet consists almost exclusively of bamboo. Much of what is eaten is passed as waste. To make up for the inefficient digestion, a Panda needs to eat 10-20 kg a day. It typically lives around 20 years in the wild and up to 30 years in captivity. Wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 1,590 individuals living their native habitat, while another 600 pandas live in zoos and breeding centres around the world. The Giant Pandas have come to symbolize vulnerable species.

Giant Pandas reproduce infrequently. They feed on several varieties of bamboo that bloom at different times of the year. If one type of bamboo is destroyed by development, it can leave the pandas with nothing to eat during the time it normally blooms. Habitat loss may lead to extinction of the species. 

We visited the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu suburb, Sichuan, China. The facility was founded in 1987. It started with six sick and hungry Giant Pandas rescued from the wild. By 2008, it had 124 Panda births, and the captive Panda population has grown to 83.
