Taipei 台北, Taiwan - a photo on Flickriver

            Taipei City 臺北, situated in the northern part of the island of Taiwan, is the capital of the Republic of China (ROC). The metropolitan has a population of nearly seven million.

Taipei was the provincial capital of Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty of China.  When Taiwan became a colony of Japan, Taipei was its capital.  Extensive urban planning and railroad links were constructed during this period.  The Republic of China took over the island in 1945 following Japanese surrender. After losing mainland China to the Communist Party of China in the Chinese Civil War, the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) relocated the ROC government to Taiwan and declared Taipei to be the provisional capital of the Republic of China in December 1949.
