2023 Tom Pidcock delivers a headbutt *

The cross in Hulst announced itself again as a duel between the Big Three (Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Tom Pidcock), but it never came to that. Tom Pidcock crashed in the first corner and also had to deal with equipment failure. For the Briton, the race was finished concerning the top places and became a long catch-up race.
Pidcock couldn't start from the front row anyway and had to dive into the field in the middle of the pack. Although the ex-world champion took diving very literally, because once on the lawn he collapsed. Result: a broken shifter and all the other riders left him behind. So in fact Pidcock started as the last of 99!
The Briton then seemed to hesitate for a moment, but then decided to run towards the equipment post. With a new bike, the Ineos all-rounder started a hellish catch-up race. After an hour of cross, Pidcock could look back on a successful training. With a 25th place, he had simply passed more than seventy riders. Although one thing went unnoticed. TV images show that Pidcock headbutted another rider in full pursuit. Perhaps he wanted to indicate that he was coming, but it was not very courteous of the Brit. By the way, in football that's worth a red card...
