1930 TDF Antonin Magne The Monk

            ANTONIN MAGNE (1904-1983) was a French cyclist and sports director.
Tonin the Sage aka the Monk, a prestigious champion and human being, has given brilliant demonstrations of his athlete talents and exemplary honesty throughout his career. Not only has he respected his favorite saying 'without virtue no fame' in his private and professional life, but he has also passed it on to generations of cyclists for whom he has been a sports director spanning a quarter of a century, from 1945 to 1969. Magne was the guide and master for Louison Bobet, Rik Van Steenbergen, Fred De Bruyne, Raymond Impanis and Raymond Poulidor. They were his pupils and the leaders of the Mercier team, which turned Antonin Magne into a real institution.
During his career as a cyclist he stated: 'You have to persevere and save your strength to be as strong at the end as you were at the beginning.' This is how Tonin defined the secret of the Tour de France. Mange rode 10 Tours and finished nine of them. The French rider and then journalist, Jean Bobet (brother of...), described him in Sporting Cyclist as "a most uninterviewable character" and "a man who withdraws into a shell as soon as he meets a journalist."
