1965 GIRO Adorni on the mythical Stelvio

            VITTORIO ADORNI (1937) is a former Italian cyclist. He became a professional cyclist in 1961. His most important victories were in 1965 (Giro) and in 1968 when he became world champion among the pros. Adorni won 11 stages in the Giro.

Vittorio Adorni had steadily improved over the years and reached the full maturity of his powers in 1965.
He took the lead in the sixth stage but lost the lead to Bruno Mealli in the eighth stage due to a successful breakaway that finished almost 15 minutes ahead of the main contenders.
However, Adorni regained the lead in the Sicilian time trial and continuously extended his lead in the following stages.
His lead of 11 minutes 26 seconds over second Italo Zilioli had already been reached before the start of the Stelvio stage and is the largest since Fausto Coppi's 1949 victory of 23 minutes 47 seconds over Gino Bartali.

In 1968 Adorni rode for a year for the famous FAEMA team of Eddy Merckx and the young Merckx would learn from his older teammate some important tricks of the trade...
