1934 TDF RENE VIETTO A Tour Legend...

            In the category "Tour de France Legends" the great RENE VIETTO  can't be left out!

In the 1934 Tour de France, a little unknown cyclist from Cannes, a former bellhop in a Cannes casino, who was called RENE VIETTO, suddenly took off in the mountains. He was prepared for the roads in the Alps and easily won on the steepest mountain passes. The star of this young, tanned champion who liked to keep it silent, continued to rise after every mountain climb.

This star peaked when, alone in front, he stopped in the Pyrenees and gave his wheel to Antonin Magne, his leader who had suffered a wheel break. This gesture, bearing witness to infinite dignity, made all of France cry. The image of this twenty-year-old boy who sacrificed his own chances of winning the Tour de France doubled his popularity.

In 1934 René Vietto becomes the King of the Mountains, but unfortunately he will never win "La Grande Boucle", but those are other stories ....
