Church of Nativity of John Baptist - a photo on Flickriver

            The Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest in Nizhny Novgorod. The wooden temple has been known since the 14th century. The stone church was built by the merchant Gabriel Stepanovich Dranishnikov. In 1676, he asked for the blessing of the Metropolitan to build a stone church of St. John the Baptist. After the blessing was given, the tutor personally purchased the necessary building materials and entered into contracting agreements with masons, carpenters, garters, blacksmiths, woodcarvers, icon painters and goldsmiths. On August 24, 1679, Gavrila Dranishnikov died suddenly, having managed to draw up a will just two days before his death, according to which he released all his serfs, and transferred the property to his brother Lavrenty, under the indispensable condition that he completes the stone Lower Posad temple. Lawrence fulfilled the will of his brother, and in 1683 the temple of John the Baptist was consecrated.
The church was built according to the “ship” type, which was then widespread in Nizhny Novgorod. Since the temple was erected on a mountainside, a brick "podium" was built under it.
The building was erected soundly, for centuries, and despite frequent fires it served as an adornment of Nizhny Posad until the beginning of the 19th century. But in 1834-1839, urban planning began, during which the temple underwent repair work.
In 1881-1885, major restoration work had to be carried out again, and the bell tower had to be rebuilt altogether, which significantly distorted the appearance of the ancient temple. The Soviet era also left its mark on the Church of St. John the Baptist.
The temple was returned to the Nizhny Novgorod diocese in the 90s of the XX century. In June 2004, it was decided to restore the unique appearance of the Church of St. John the Baptist. Construction work began. The Church of the Nativity of John the Forerunner was consecrated on November 4, 2005 by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II.
