LA STRADA MAESTRA DELLA SERENISSIMA

Il Canal Grande, detto il “Canalazzo” dai veneziani, divide il centro storico della città in due parti. E’ molto più antico di Venezia, e la costruzione della città sulle sue sponde si è dovuta adattare al percorso che la via d’acqua principale compie.
Il Canale si sviluppa per circa quattro chilometri ed ha la forma di una “S” rovesciata avendo come due estremi l’Innesto del Ponte della Libertà e il Bacino di S. Marco. Il Canal Grande, mediamente, è profondo 5 metri e la sua larghezza varia a seconda dei punti, dove può raggiungere un massimo di 70 metri.

THE MAIN ROAD OF THE SERENISSIMA

The Grand Canal, called the “Canalazzo” by the Venetians, divides the historic center of the city into two parts. It is much older than Venice, and the construction of the city on its banks had to adapt to the path that the main waterway takes.
The Canal extends for about four kilometers and has the shape of an inverted “S” having as its two ends the junction of the Ponte della Libertà and the Basin of St. Mark. The Grand Canal, on average, is 5 meters deep and its width varies depending on the points, where it can reach a maximum of 70 meters.
