STARANZANO. ISOLA DELLA CONA - a photo on Flickriver

            IL CIGNO REALE.

L’Isola della Cona assieme all’area del Caneo fa parte della Riserva Naturale della Foce dell’Isonzo; racchiusa in un’area di 2.400 ettari, l’area è situata lungo gli ultimi 15 km del fiume Isonzo ed è stata riconosciuta come miglior zona d’Italia per il birdwatching. Il suo simbolo è il chiurlo maggiore e dista solo 2o km da Grado.
Un ecosistema unico al mondo, dove è possibile ammirare la rigogliosa flora (650 le specie presenti) e la fauna autoctone (sono 323 le specie avicole censite nella Riserva). È l’habitat ideale per decine di specie di uccelli acquatici come gli aironi, le folaghe, i germani reali, le alzavole, le marzaiole, le anatre e i gabbiani.

Il cigno reale è un grande uccello originario del Vecchio Mondo che da almeno 900 anni viene allevato in Europa occidentale, prima per la carne e poi come animale ornamentale. Attualmente è presente anche in Asia e Nord Africa ed è stato introdotto con successo in Nord America, dove è residente in molte aree.
Cygnus olor vive in baie riparate, paludi aperte, laghi e stagni e, in inverno, non è raro vedere oltre 100 individui in specchi di acqua salata. È la specie di cigno più comune in natura e quella più grande: misura circa 1,5 m di lunghezza e ha un'apertura alare di 2-2,5 metri. Inoltre, con i loro 15 kg, sono fra gli uccelli più pesanti al mondo. I due sessi sono simili ma i maschi sono generalmente più grandi delle femmine.
