PARIGI. IL LOUVRE.

            RIFLESSO PIRAMIDALE.

Inaugurata nel 1989, la Piramide di vetro fu progettata dall’ architetto di origine cinese Ieoh Ming Pei su richiesta del presidente Mitterrand. L’idea fu di realizzare uno spazio nuovo, destinato all’ accoglienza del pubblico del Louvre, che fosse espressione dell’architettura d’avanguardia e che consentisse al tempo stesso una armoniosa convivenza con l’antico museo - realizzato per volontà di Filippo Augusto nel 1190 circa come roccaforte per proteggere la città e diventato un museo solo nei secoli successivi. 
Pei ha immaginato il nuovo spazio d’accoglienza in quella che oggi è la nota Piramide di vetro che incorona le gallerie sotterranee sotto la Cour Napoléon, il cortile all’ interno del Louvre. 
Una sorta di lucernario alto 20 metri che copre l’entrata sotterranea del museo, dove trovano spazio ristoranti, gallerie, negozi, librerie ed un auditorio, di cui la piramide rappresenta il prolungamento in superficie.

La struttura si presenta come un diamante da 200 tonnellate, realizzato in alluminio (circa 50 tonnellate di profilati) e acciaio inossidabile con losanghe di vetro.
