Double-headed at Newport - a photo on Flickriver

            "Flying Scotsman" and "King George V" leave Newport with the "Atlantic Venturer Express" on 22 September 1973. This tour had come up from Plymouth behind D1005 "Western Venturer", and I wonder now why I didn't photo the Western? This pair then worked as far as Shrewsbury, with the two locos changing places, so that KG5 was leading from Hereford. 4472 was left in Shrewsbury and 6000 haul the train back to Newport, from where D1005 was used to return the tour to Plymouth.

The mass trespass evident in this picture was a feature of early 1970s steam rail tours. There are photographers all over the track, and even a group at the top of a signal. All this was apparently tolerated by BT police at the time - I remember BT police simply ensuring that tracks were clear if another train was seen to approach.
