CHAPTER HOUSE, THORNTON ABBEY, HUMBERSIDE_DSC_0343_LR_2.0

            Thornton Abbey was founded as a priory in 1139. It was an Augustinian Abbey and most of the buildings date from 1264. It was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1539. The Chapter House begun 1282, is octagonal 43 ft across.
The magnificent gatehouse was an enlargement of a previous structure and dates from 1382 using partly stone but more substantially red brick orginally rendered with white mortor.
