Killochan Castle (5) - a photo on Flickriver

            Above the doorway in the foot of the stair-tower, are two carved stones.  The lintel stone is engraved with "This work was begun the 1(st) of Marche 1586 be Ihone Cathcart of Carltoun and Helene Wallace his spous."  It then goes on to advise that "The name of the Lord is ane strang tour and the rytheous in thair troublis rinnis unto it and findeth refuge."  Always handy to know!

Higher up above the door is an armorial panel, which repeats the date 1586 and the names of "John Cathcart of Carltoun and Helene Wallace his spous".  The arms are the combined arms of Cathcart and Wallace, over which is the motto "By faith we ar savet."

The doorway is defended by a machicolated projection five floors above - which is essentially an external 'murder hole', designed to allow the defenders to drop things on the heads of unwelcome guests.
