Everest - a photo on Flickriver

            Mount Everest viewed from Scoundrel's View above Gokyo (using my zoom), looking up the West Ridge.  Left of the West Ridge is the North Face, and the prominent gully is the Hornbein Couloir.  The Great Couloir, also known as Norton's Couloir, can be see a bit further over to the left.  The South Summit is the small lump on the South Ridge (right skyline), and the left skyline is the North-east Ridge, which is completely in Tibet (or China, as the Chinese would prefer to say!!!).

The Hornbein Couloir is named after Tom Hornbein, who together with Willi Unsoeld, made one of the great ascents of Himalayan climbing history, the first ascent of Everest's West Ridge.  They passed a point of no return on their climb, and ended up descending the South Ridge, after bivouacking not far below the top.  In his book, Hornbein said of their bivouac - ''The night was overwhelmingly empty. The black silhouette of Lhotse was lurking there, half seen, half assumed, and below us there was nothing – simply nothing. We hung in a timeless gap with nothing to do but to shiver and to wait for the sun to rise.''
