Boarding the ferry, Boonville, Missouri, September, 1919

            Here's Henry A. Spallholz in his 1917 Haynes Light Six four passenger roadster approaching the ferry "Sterling". At this point the Spallholz family is into the last few weeks of a 96 day, 10,400 mile cross-country trip.

This photograph is part of a collection of lantern slide images taken by H. A. Spallholz, and his wife Lizzie, in the summer of 1919. He was the manager of the Manhattan Shirt Company in Salem, NY at the time, and took his family on a drive to the west coast and back in a Haynes Light Six four passenger roadster. He was careful to label each image, something every photographer should do. All the photos of the trip were taken with two cameras, a Kodak 3A Autographic  and a 3A Graflex.  They both used the same "post card" sized 3A film ( 3 1/4" x 5 1/2"). Each camera appears in a few of his trip images.
        I found these slides and the original projector, a Bausch & Lomb “Home Balopticon” (combination lantern slide and opaque projector), in the Salvation Army store in Portland, Maine in 1967. At that time I was stationed on a Coast Guard buoy tender based in South Portland, and between paydays didn’t have a lot of cash. Despite being low on funds, I shelled out a grand total of $15.00 for the lot, their full asking price. There are about 400 glass plates in the entire collection.

After seeing a few images I posted on Flickr, the two grandsons of the driver contacted me. After more than five years of working with them, a book about their 1919 transcontinental trip is being published by Texas Tech University Press... "Auto Touring America's National Parks... The Photography of H.A.Spallholz".
