Cotton Module, Haskell County, Texas

            This is one of a half dozen cotton modules (monstrous bales) of cotton arranged along the edge of a harvested cotton field. We had spent the day cruising around Haskell and Baylor Counties cramming in as much photography as possible, it being our last whole day in Texas before driving back to new England.
 Cotton Modules are huge bales of compressed cotton, the usual size being about 11 feet tall, 7.5 feet wide and 32 feet long. Their weight, depending upon moisture content runs about 11 tons (American). They're flat on top, unlike the curved example shown here... the effect being distortion created by standing close to the module and pointing my phone upwards to include some sky.

Modules are created by "module builders", machines usually positioned at the edge of cotton fields. The cotton harvester is followed by a tractor towing a "boll buggy". When the harvester is full the buggy is moved beside it and receives cotton transferred from the harvester. The boll buggy is run over to the module builder, the cotton fed in, where the builder levels the load as it's received. The builder compresses the cotton, much like a trash compactor, the process being repeated until the module is the required size, then the huge bale is extruded through the end of the machine. The effect is similar to a round hay baler ejecting a finished bale. Seed cotton is usually covered by a huge tarp offering protection from weather. Modules are later trucked to the Cotton Plant for ginning. 

The day we were here there was a notice in the local paper offering a hefty reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for vandalizing cotton module covers by cutting them.
