"Ribeira Brava", Funchal, Madeira - a photo on Flickriver

            Here the crew of a small fishing boat is passing the time working at various chores in preparation for night fishing. A local friend mentioned that they would probably be going out into very deep water to hunt for Black Scabbard Fish (Piexe Espada Preto), a very scary-looking deep water fish that lives at depths ranging from about 600 to 6000 feet, thus are beyond the reach of surface fishermen. Special long lines are used to catch these "toothy monsters". Anyone traveling to Madeira should definitely try a Scabbard Fish and fried banana dinner. It sounds strange, but really is quite a treat.

Taken in the early afternoon, everyone seemed to be working slowly... just passing the time while waiting for the sun to drop toward the horizon. Returning to this location while walking back to my hotel after dinner I found the boat had left. Many of these older boats have disappeared, being replaced by more modern vessels.
