The statue of William Etty, Exhibition Square, York

            William Etty is York's most famous artist he was born on 10th March 1787 and died on 13th November 1849. He is best known for his historical paintings containing nude figures. Born in York, he left school at the age of 12 to become an apprentice printer in Hull. He completed his apprenticeship seven years later and moved to London, where in 1807 he joined the Royal Academy Schools. A shy man, he never married and lived with his sister when he retired through ill health and returned to York in the 1840s. He was instrumental in setting up the York Art School and was a prominent campaigner to save York city walls from demolition. His statue is deservedly placed outside the city art gallery, facing part of the city walls. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil in an A5 size Moleskine sketchbook.
