Church of St Martin, Coney Street, York

            The clock is one of York's best known landmarks, in the main shopping street of the city. The church was badly damaged by enemy action in 1942 but the south aisle, to the left, was rebuilt in 1961-2 by George Pace as a smaller version of the church. A gaarden was fromed in the former nave and north aisle. While the south aisle and tower date mostly from the late 15th century parts of the north wall of the notrth aisle, agains the neighbouring building on the right, are considerably earlier. The famous clock was added to the east front in 1778. Topped by a figure of a naval officer it replaces an earlier clock of 1660.
