Mad Alice Lane from the Swinegate end, a snicket in York

            Mad Alice Lane, also known as Lund's Court, is a snickelway that runs from Swinegate to Low Petergate. It's commonly used modern name is thought to have come about because Alice Smith, who was convicted of murder and hanged, is believed to have have lived here in the mid 19th century.

To the left is a mid to late 19th century house behind number 18 Swinegate. To the right lie the rear ranges of 87 Low Petergate. Furthest away is the 5-bay long, 3-storey timber framed building of probably late 15th century date. Not much of the frame is visible insdie or outside. The nearer building is a formerly 3-storey building of late 14th or early 15th century. This has been truncated in length as well as height. From 1694 it was known as 'The Old Racket'. the tumbled brick gable suggests it was reduced in height around 1700.
