Clovelly, North Devon * - a photo on Flickriver

            The small village of Clovelly in North Devon has a documented history going back almost 1,000 years and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 although there was probably a settlement here in Anglo Saxon times. Although tourism has replaced fishing as the main source of income, the small boats, nets, pots and floats in the harbour show fishing is still very much alive.

This photograph shows the main street which is so narrow and steep that no motorised vehicles are permitted to use it and all deliveries and collections from the houses and shops along its length are made with the use of wooden sledges.

From the point this photograph was taken is around 1/4 mile downhill to the harbour and in some places the road is even narrower and steeper than this. Going down is not so much of a problem but coming up is more challenging. 

The village is privately owned and most of the houses along this street are listed buildings, giving them legal protection from redevelopment or major change thereby maintaining the character of the area.
