Lifeboat Manoeuvres - a photo on Flickriver

            This shot was taken at the entrance to Chichester Harbour and shows the inshore lifeboat Derrick Battle based at Hayling Island Lifeboat Station. In the background are the beaches of West Wittering in Sussex.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution {RNLI} was founded in 1824 and dedicated to saving lives at sea around the coasts of the  UK, the Republic  of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It maintains 237 lifeboat stations with 444 lifeboats and operates day and night every day of the year in any weather. 

In 2016 it saved 558 lives and rescued 23 people every day. It is funded solely from charitable donations/legacies and most of the lifeboat crews work on a voluntary basis. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. The courage and dedication of crews is beyond doubt and underscored by the fact that since its inception the Institution has saved more than 140,000 lives but at the cost of over 600 lifeboat crew lives.
