Martin William Joseph Murphy 1898 - a photo on Flickriver

            Martin William Joseph Murphy (1878-1918) 1898.  Buddy's Father at age 19 when he enlisted for service during the Spanish American War. Martin was second generation Irish born in the USA. The youngest son of Martin Joseph Murphy & Catherine May Murphy. He had two older siblings, Edward (1874), Patrick (1877) all were born in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Martin was quite a fellow. Whenever a skimish broke out he was there to serve his country. From the time he was 19 years old he kept re-enlisting in the Army, or Navy reserves.  In between times he worked as a laborer, teamster, a singing waiter and played the piano at silent movie theatres .In France, during WWI he saw a piano in a destroyed house and had it put on a wagon. As his unit marched to their new position, he serenaded them from the wagon and played their favorite songs.  Martin was killed March 12, 1918 in Nievre, France. Some articles claimed he was gassed others stated it was an accident. Since the records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis in 1973 we were never able to find out what actually happened.
